Memories of Liz

14 May 2020

Last week we started sharing memories of (guest)crew members on board of the OOSTERSCHELDE. Today, Liz, who did 5 voyages on the OOSTERSCHELDE, will tell us more about her experiences.

Firstly, I have thoroughly enjoyed all my trips on the OOSTERSCHELDE.
I have always wanted to see St. Kilda and so when I saw a trip advertised to go to St. Kilda via Orkney and Lewis in July of 2010 I jumped at the chance.  Unfortunately, due to very bad weather we did not see Orkney and ended up in Broad Bay in Lewis to wait out the weather. Unfortunately we did not make it to St. Kilda.

Then in 2015 another trip was going to St. Kilda.  This time we got  to Orkney and again ended up in Stornoway to wait out the bad weather.  No St. Kilda, but Maarten managed a trip to North Rona – such an interesting island and many puffins!

Then, in 2018 another trip to St. Kilda was advertised – I thought third time lucky and I was correct. We made it on a glorious day in August.  We spent the day on St. Kilda with our packed lunch.  The picture shows the view from where I ate my lunch.  It was just a magical day.

My other highlight was last year’s trip from Bergen to Bodo – just beautiful.  I will never forget the Parade of Sail and Maarten firing the cannon as we left Bergen. The other highlight was passing across the Arctic circle and the baptism.
