When you step aboard in Leuvehaven in Rotterdam, the ‘Oosterschelde’ is already prepared for departure. Right in the heart of the city, yet with our gaze set firmly on the open sea. The crew warmly welcomes you, and before long you will meet your fellow travellers. During dinner, the captain outlines the plans for the coming weeks and explains life on board, a life in which you will soon find yourself absorbed in the rhythm of the ship. On the first evening, we take things easy, allowing everything to settle in while enjoying the atmosphere on board.

The following morning, we cast off and leave Rotterdam behind. Via the North Sea, we head south towards the English Channel. These are busy waters, where cargo vessels and fishing boats constantly cross paths. On deck, a steady rhythm quickly develops: adjusting sails, standing watch, and gradually becoming accustomed to the ship’s motion.

As we reach the Bay of Biscay, the sea changes character. Depths increase from around 100 metres to several thousand metres. This is the open ocean, known for its dynamic conditions, with strong winds and accompanying seas at times. We take turns at the helm and respond to the elements. Yet between the squalls, there are also calm moments, with clear skies and an endless horizon.

Along the Portuguese coast, the light softens and warms. The days take on a different pace, with more time spent on deck and a sea that more often shows its gentle side. Near Cape São Vicente, we turn southwest. The wind becomes steadier and sailing feels almost effortless. Life on board has now become familiar: watches, shared meals, and nights beneath an impressive star-filled sky. Gradually, the Canary Islands announce themselves, first in the light and only later in the outline of Tenerife rising from the sea.

As we enter Santa Cruz de Tenerife, it feels remarkable to see land again after so many days at sea. The ‘Oosterschelde’ comes to rest in the harbour. Here, in the Canary Islands, our voyage ends, a journey from the wintry north to a warm, almost tropical destination.

We would like the ‘Oosterschelde’ to be accessible to everyone, but making a sea voyage aboard a sailing ship can be challenging and you must be sufficiently fit and healthy to do so. We divide all trips into three levels with an icon of one, two or three waves. Not every level is suitable for everyone. The shipping company may contact you to discuss your participation. Level 1

Level 1 voyages are suitable for anyone with good mobility and health. Often these voyages are in sheltered areas or close to the coast. However, it is still a journey on a sailing ship, at sea and so you must weigh up for yourself whether you can cope.

Level 2

Level 2 voyages are often heavier or further from home. You must be able to cope well under sometimes challenging conditions, but in case of need, the ship can be in a port within 24 – 48 hours. There is no age limit, but you may be asked to provide additional proof of fitness or health.

Level 3

Level 3 voyages are only for the experienced and fit sea traveler. The weather can be challenging and there are no ports to call at, along the way. We are out of helicopter range and medical care  from shore is not available. Level 3 voyages are suitable for participants up to the age of 73. If you are 73 years of age or above, you are very welcome to join our Level 1 or Level 2 voyages. The shipping company may contact you to request additional proof of fitness or health.
