Just in Time

The Îles Chausey, an island group not far from Le Mont-Saint-Michel. We were anchored there, waiting for the right wind to continue our journey. A beautiful place, too. If you have to wait somewhere, it might as well be here.

In this area, it is important to keep a close eye on the tides, as the current can be very strong in certain places. Cap de la Hague is one such place, especially when you are around spring tide, as we were now.

The south-easterly wind we had been waiting for picked up in the evening, so we set sail. It all turned out to be perfectly timed.

When I was woken for my watch, we were exactly an hour past slack water and were being swept around Cap de la Hague with the current, making 14 knots (8 knots of which were due to the current), as we continued our course in a north-easterly direction.
