Concarneau to the Côte de Fleurs and La Rochelle

After a brief stop at the small fishing community on Île de Groix, the ‘Oosterschelde’ continued to Concarneau, where the old walled town guards the narrow channel leading into the harbour. The maritime character of Concarneau is a blend of traditional sailing and modernity. Once a working fishing port where tuna and sardines were caught under sail, the town is now home to a naval shipyard as well as high-end racing yachts. The character of the old walled town, however, remains largely unchanged; here, artisans still outnumber souvenir shops.

During our stay in Concarneau, the wind gradually eased and a high-pressure system settled over the area. As we left the old town behind, light winds and calm seas marked the remainder of our voyage. Initially sailing on a beam reach under full sail, and later on a broad reach with the forecourse set, we sailed gently southeast, passing Belle-Île and Île d’Yeu on our way towards La Rochelle.
