Approaching July 4

As July 4—the big day—draws closer, life aboard Oosterschelde is becoming increasingly busy. After spending the night at our spectacular anchorage beside the Statue of Liberty, we sailed through the heart of New York City, past its iconic skyline, beneath its famous bridges, and through Hell Gate into the calm waters of Long Island Sound.

The people of Greenwich turned out in large numbers, taking to the water in boats of every size to escort us into town and give us an incredibly warm welcome. As if it had all been planned, we arrived just in time to celebrate “Oosterschelde Day,” officially proclaimed by the mayor.

After our visit to Greenwich, we headed back toward New York. By now, we can honestly say we’re getting to know the East River quite well. At Lower Manhattan, we turned to starboard and continued up the Hudson River. Today and tomorrow we’re in Yonkers, a city on the Hudson just north of the New York City borough of The Bronx.

Once again, we’ve been met with exceptional hospitality. It’s wonderful to see how diverse our visitors are here. In a city that is home to more than a hundred nationalities, we’re welcoming people from all over the world aboard. Meanwhile, the heat is becoming an increasing challenge. It’s already hot and humid, and the forecast calls for even higher temperatures and humidity over the coming days.
