Underway
We are underway. On Friday, March 6, late in the morning, we departed from Mindelo for the crossing to Paramaribo. We are now making good progress at speeds between 4.5 and 6 knots. During the first night after departure we had lighter winds, sheltered in the lee of Santo Antão.
During the day we use the time for maintenance on board. A voyage like this is perfect for it: there is little spray on deck, the weather is fairly predictable, and we are not constantly busy setting or taking down sails.
Today we started repairing a torn schooner sail. It’s quite a job, but once you get going and keep stitching steadily, a lot can be done within a few watches. Fortunately, we have help from several enthusiastic guest crew members.
Conditions are also ideal to sand down some of the deck woodwork and apply a fresh coat of varnish, which we hope to start in the coming days.
For now, we’ll keep you updated.
Greetings from the crew.
