A rescued bird
We have departed from Sal, bound for Paramaribo. This time with an unusual group on board: a production crew with camera and sound technicians, along with the documentary’s main participants. An interesting voyage ahead, more about that soon.
Before crossing the Atlantic, filming was scheduled on São Vicente and Santo Antão, which is why we are currently anchored off Mindelo for a few days.
On our way there, the afternoon of departure was perfect: steady course, good speed and sunshine. Suddenly, a brown booby landed on the yardarm of the topsail. Not unusual, tired seabirds often rest on board. But this one moved awkwardly and flew poorly. We quickly discovered why: it was entangled in fishing line, wrapped several times around its beak and one leg.
The bird attempted to fly off but could not get far and kept returning. After our watch, just after dinner, Edson, fearless as ever, walked into the saloon carrying the bird under his arm. He had managed to catch it. While he held the struggling booby firmly, Koen and I carefully cut away the fishing line using a kitchen knife and scissors. Not an easy task: the bird resisted fiercely and hissed loudly. Quite impressive up close.
Once freed and released back on deck, it immediately flew away, far more smoothly than before. A satisfying sight.
Today, March 5, we are making the final preparations for the Atlantic crossing. Early tomorrow morning, we will set sail for Paramaribo. A first for both ship and crew. Exciting times ahead.
