Maintenance on board

We are almost back in Palmeira, marking the end of our third Cape Verde voyage. Over the coming days, the crew will have extra time for essential maintenance to keep the ‘Oosterschelde’ in good condition.

On deck, the anchor windlass will receive a thorough service. It will be cleaned, de-rusted, painted and lubricated. As the windlass is used frequently in Cape Verde, proper maintenance is vital to ensure it continues to operate reliably.

It is also time for a routine inspection of the rigging. The crew will climb all masts, right up to the very top, checking every shackle, block, line, stay and, of course, the mast itself. In short, everything in, on and around the masts will be carefully inspected.

In a previous news update, we mentioned that we planned to look for the mango trees planted in Tarrafal in 2023. As so often happens on board a ship, plans changed along the way. We will make a new attempt to find “our” mango trees on a future voyage.
