The Bay of Biscay

The Bay of Biscay has a reputation for unpredictable and sometimes rough autumn conditions – stories of storms, bad weather, and towering waves are common. During our crossing last week, we encountered a bit of everything: some showers, choppy seas, and steady winds. However, there was no real storm to speak of. In fact, we also enjoyed sunshine, good sailing conditions, and even dolphins accompanying us along the way.

We covered the roughly 380 Nm between Île d’Ouessant and Cabo Finisterre at a solid pace. Upon arrival, we anchored overnight in the Bay of Muros, where the ocean’s motion gradually shifted into gentle rocking – giving everyone a welcome sense of fulfillment.

While en route to Porto, we received word that our intended port of arrival was unexpectedly inaccessible due to harbour workers strikes. A new plan was made, leading us instead to Vigo in Spain. Not Portugal, but certainly a good step closer to our next destination: Madeira.
