Simon’s Town
On Saturday, April 19th, we set off under engine power through thick fog, heading for Simon’s Town. We anchored there while hosting an open ship for visitors. In the afternoon, a bust of Charles Darwin was unveiled—an especially memorable moment. Originally, we had planned to return to Cape Town on Monday, but the weather around the notorious Cape of Good Hope had other ideas. With wind speeds reaching force 7, it was not a place to approach unless absolutely necessary. Eventually, the wind increased to force 9, so we were grateful to be safely anchored with two anchors holding us steady.
Today, Wednesday, April 23rd, we finally set off again. At dawn, we used the dinghy to bring the Darwin leaders ashore for their research work, and welcomed about 28 guests aboard for the return journey to Cape Town. The first 15 miles were under engine power, pushing against considerable swells. Once we rounded the Cape, we were able to hoist some sail. The weather was bright and clear, and as we turned westward, we gradually set more sail. We’re now running before the wind with all square sails and the mainsail set, heading north. Just 30 miles to go until we reach Cape Town.
