The excitement is building

We have been underway for just over two days now and South Georgia is getting closer and closer. Especially after we all watched the introductory film about this special island, we are getting more and more excited. Only 330 nautical miles to go! On deck, we can feel the temperatures dropping and especially for the night watches, everyone needs a little extra time to get dressed before coming on deck. For the last two days, we have been sailing downwind, or on a broad reach, so that we can stand in the lee of the wheelhouse while steering to stay a little warmer.

Around noon today the wind dropped and so did our speed. So we soon decided to drop all the square sails and put some speed on the engine to keep up the good progress towards our first stop on this voyage. But even without sails there is still plenty to do to keep us entertained. In the afternoon we watched an extensive presentation on Southern Ocean birds, tussac grass and other wildlife of the Falklands and South Georgia. And just in time for the evening, the skies cleared to give us a colourful evening sky, a beautiful sunset and a bright starry night.
