Masts

While many have been busy working on the hull of the OOSTERSCHELDE, part of the crew worked on the rigging. The masts were scraped bare, sanded, and put back in five ‘coats’ of lacquer. The booms and gaffs were also taken care of. The many wooden blocks were refurbished and the standing and running rigging were checked in one of the large sheds of the Talsma shipyard.

These enormous sheds, by the way, are wonderful places to work in. With the two overhead cranes, we were able to lift and turn over our really large masts quite easily. Now that the ship is back in the water, we sailed to the warehouse in the east of Franeker to put the masts back on the ship, as we did feel a bit ‘naked’ without them ;-). Another step closer!
