Heading to the Azores

2 March 2020

Yesterday, we started the ocean voyage from Cape Verde to the Mediterranean Sea. Sailing in a straight line to the Strait of Gibraltar is actually impossible because of the Northeastern Passat that dominates around Cape Verde. This is because the group of island is on the south side of the high pressure centre above the Azores.

So, the first challenge of this trip is to reach the north side of this high pressure centre. Then we can expect wind from the southwest. For now we have to keep sailing close hauled towards the northwest. Slowly, the wind will turn and we can steer more to the north.

With a nice bow and some luck we will arrive at the Azores. In about then days we will see if it really works out….
