“We are at anchor and it is quiet in the bay. Every now and then a breeze comes through the mountains. This morning at nine we brought all the guests to shore to meet up with our local guide, Nish, to explore the island.

São Nicolau is my favourite island. This is mostly because of the people that live here. Everyone is happy to help with whatever you need and never expect anything in return. And everybody shares. Once I gave a guy on the fishermen’s pier a bag of chips and the bag went over the whole pier and fish market and everyone received a hand of chips. I like that!

You can also notice a difference between the two larger towns on the island: Ribeira Brava and Tarrafal. Tarrafal is a true fishermen’s town, a bit rough, friendly and people like to have a party. While Ribeira Brava is more quiet, intellectual, a bit more the aristocrats of the island. Nature wise the island looks a bit like Santo Antão. Green and rugged mountains. A nice place to be.”
