French festivals

31 May 2019

This week we are at the maritime festival ‘Semaine du Golfe’, in the Golfe du Marbihan, France. Captain Maarten loves the French festivals. Partly because the way they are organized. Nobody seems to know exactly what, when and how things should happen, but that is not a problem at all, because somehow it always turns out just fine.

Another reason why he likes French festivals is that French people have an outstanding taste when it comes to boats. The whole day we see beautiful ships and boats surrounding us! A small sailingship, a classic jacht or a gorgeously restored speedboat. And everything that floats sails, and everything that has sails has hoisted the sails. It is not an uncommon sight here, to see three men in a small boat of 1,5 meters. With a strong current of 5 knots, but nobody seems to care. Everyone enjoys the the company of each other and the beautiful views.

Because of the strong current, we have to be careful. With only little wind we already go fast. The deep waters and the rocks collide, so a mistake is made easily. And on top of that, it’s quite hard to spot a buoy, a leading-line or a churchtower because of the hunderds of sails that are in our view…

Today, there is barely any wind and it is sunny. We will wash the deck, put sunscreen on our bodies, and we will welcome all the people that are interested on board! We are looking forward to a great day with lovely views!
