Almost 4 weeks on board

18 December 2018

In Tenerife, some of the crew disembarked, and new guest crew came on board for the last part of the voyage to Cape Verde. Until now, we had a variety of all sorts of weather during the trip. However, we expect the last week to be a bit better and warmer. But there are also some parts that we had to use the engine, because of the little wind. One of the advantages is that we do not run watches during the night, so we can sleep through the entire night. For me, it’s the trip of a lifetime! I would never have assumed what a sailing trip of 3000 nautical miles can do to a person. And all the things one learns! I have learned to pay attention to the wind, watch the stars at night and learned some of how navigation is done.

On board, there is a cozy atmosphere. Crew and guest crew work together closely to keep the ship going. The work of ships’ cook Richard is extraordinary! Again and again he serves a complete meal out of his galley. All crew members are very committed to the guests and the ship. I am very grateful for this experience. Tomorrow we will arrive in Cape Verde, and the voyage will be over. Nearly 4 weeks have passed.

I wish the ‘Oosterschelde’ and her crew all the best and fair winds for many years to come.
