37 degrees north

18 May 2018

Once we arrived at 36 degrees north the wind was not what we had expected, so we decided to sail further north before heading east. At 37 degrees north, we found the wind and jibed and started heading east as fast as possible!
Because we were not sailing in a straight line and we first sailed north, the miles to Horta did not drop fast. But now it’s going better and better. Today we will sail broad reach again and we expect to get the number of miles to go down quickly.
Today a low-pressure area north of us will make the wind stronger so that is great! Then, sometime during the night the wind will veer north so we will jibe again and keep steering east. But after that it will get a bit messy…
Between the low pressure north of us and the next one there is a high-pressure area and it looks like this will spoil our plans a bit. But it is hard to determine how close the high pressure area will come and how much it will affect us. We are not a Volvo Open 70 anyway, so there is not much more to do than roll with the punches.
