30 January 2018

The 28th of January was the birthday of mate Kiel. So, at breakfast the garlands were up and we song ‘Happy Birthday’. As crew you always know something is going to happen on a crew members birthday, but we kept it quite low-key. The one thing was, Kiel could not find his left shoe during the entire morning. How odd, to find only the right shoe on the exact spot where you left your shoes. After searching for his left shoe the entire morning, he became a little bit irritated, and so it was time for his first present. Everyone was on board, we song another song and beautifully wrapped his left shoe appeared! Kiel was happy. Since this is his last voyage on board before his holidays, he received his flight ticket home, after another song. After dinner there was cake, and another present from the crew: a bottle of Groque, and 30 shot glasses as a hint. All together we toasted on his birthday.
The next days the garlands were still there, and some people wondered what the reason was. Earlier this week we heard that Konrad and Sabine would be married for 25 years during this voyage. With a little investigation we found out they got married on the 29th, and they wanted to avoid festivities. Well… after dinner another cake appeared, with hearts and a big 25 years, and they noted that this occasion not just passes by quietly. From the ‘Oosterschelde’ they received a present in silver, and there was a glass of champagne for everyone. Konrad gave a lovely speech about their marriage including a sailing-trip as a metaphor. Both of them were enjoying ‘their’ party.
