Arrived in Cabo Verde

9 January 2018

Trainee Jan ten Dam ends his reports:
“Januari 9th. All good things do end, so does this trip. But it was worthwhile. We have been sailing all the way from Tenerife to Palmeira on the island of Sal: in six days time we have sailed a distance of 848 miles. We only needed the engine to leave port and get to our place to anchor. But that’s just why the ‘Oosterschelde’ is at sea, isn’t it?
During the last six days we have experienced the life at sea, mainly determined by the rhythm of doing watches and the times of breakfast, lunch and dinner. Once one is accustomed to that rhythm, there is time enough to read or do other things like looking at the sea (whalewatch like I call it). Several times we have seen dolphins, once a whale was spotted and we saw flying fish.
This afternoon the guests have the opportunity to go ashore and make their first uncertain steps on solid ground. Some choose to stay on board. Tomorrow I have to leave the ship (temporarily?) at 9 am, but I’m glad I will fly home later that day where I can add 3054 miles to my list.”
