Cold!

12 June 2017

We really do notice the fact that we’re leaving the warm Gulf stream behind. 2 nights ago we were wearing merely shorts and t-shirts, enjoying the (almost) full moon. Now we are shivering on deck! There is a temperature difference of 15 degrees. Luckily, we’re doing very well in the race so that gives us a warm feeling. Tonight, we rounded the two waypoints and now we’re on our way to the finish! At the second waypoint we encountered the ‘Peter von Danzig’ (of the D class) at the buoy. We sailed reach and ‘Peter von Danzig’ sailed closehauled, meaning that we had to give her space and go behind her. Afterwards we went windward as fast as we could. It became clear that there is a big difference sailing closehauled between us, and such a modern ship. ‘Peter von Danzig’ appears to be able to go to the finish in a straight line whereas we need to make some tacks. We set our course based on the weather forecasts and the current. We should be able to cross the finish line with 2 tacks. We think we will finish in the afternoon or evening. Then we will have to wait for the results of the other vessels.
