Counter clockwise

1 February 2017

The day before departure Maarten and I (Jan) were checking the forecast to prepare for our next voyage. It seemed like a good idea to change the route and visit the island counter clockwise instead of clockwise. It looks like this was a good decision because we are going very fast. After São Nicolau we sailed to Mindelo and the guest crew is now visiting Santo Antão. The crew is doing maintenance.
That’s one of the many reasons we like sailing in Cape Verde. After every day of sailing we are at anchor and while the guests are on the island exploring we have time to do chores. Tim (deckhand in training) has put a layer of paint with non-skid on deck, which looks great. I am always busy with varnishing to keep the ship looking great. You have to like it, but if you do it right and you finish it, it’s very rewarding!
Tomorrow we sail from Mindelo southeast to Maio or Santiago. And then we have to head north again and we have to wait and see if our decision to do it differently will work out for the last part of the trip too. We will keep you updated.
