On our way to Scotland

27 July 2016

After the festival in Douarnenez it was time do go sailing again. The guests came on board and were able to experience the end of the festivities. As an addition to the usual fireworks there was a naval battle. The replica ‘Étoile de Roy’ attacked a Portuguese galleon until it caught fire and ‘sunk’. Many gunshots and excellent lighting made it look very spectacular. After that there was dancing on a big stage and with the lighting the shadows of the people were dancing on the houses around. The evening ended with magnificent fireworks.
The next morning we did some last grocery shopping and we departed for our voyage to Scotland. There was little wind from the west so we motor-sailed the first part. At the end of the day the wind disappeared completely, so we took all the sails away. But the forecast was promising and in the early morning we could set the sails again and we had a speed of 4,5 to 5 knots on the long ocean swell. Slowly the wind got stronger and our speed increased. Six, seven, eight and even nine knots! We took the gaff-topsails, topsail and outer jib away, but we are still going 7 knots even with the current against us.
Tonight the wind will shift and decrease, so in the morning we will be fully rigged again. But the wind will die away completely and we are studying the charts to find a nice place for a visit or walk. In the evening the wind will return to push us north.
