Ready!

28 July 2015

After a few busy days in Kristiansand the new trainees came on board yesterday. Of course we started first with the welcome speech by the captain and then we discussed tactics for the coming race.
We are going to race from Kristiansand to Aalborg. But if would sail in a straight line this would be such a short distance, so the race organisers decided to put some waypoints in different places in the Skagerrak. First we will sail to the southwest to round a point. Then we sail to the east for the second point, to turn north for the third point. If we have rounded that last one it’s back to the south as fast as we can to the finish.
The weather reports are closely monitored and the tactics are adjusted if needed. And of course the current is also a factor. Where is the current strongest, in which direction is the current and can we use it to our advantage?
The trainees now have their safety instruction and we will explain all about the rigging. At 10 am we will depart and start with the Parade of Sail together with all the other Tall Ships. Then we have a couple of hours to practice before the race starts. The start is at 16:00 UTC. To avoid any confusion and errors we will use UTC time on board.
We can’t reveal too much about our tactics, but afterwards we can explain whether it was successful or not. For all other vessels: good luck with the race and of course a safe voyage!
