Installing the new main engine

2 April 2015

Because of the storm the ‘Haringvliet’-bridge did not work the last few days, so we had to wait until this morning to go to Dordrecht. We arrived there this afternoon. The ‘Oosterschelde’ is moored at the Binnen Kalkhaven, right in the middle of the old city centre.
We started right away with removing the pipes and other things that connect the old main engine with the ship. After 35 years of loyal service our old Deutz BAM816 will be replaced by an American brother. A John Deere 6135 SFM 75. Brand new, more horse power, compliant with the latest emission requirements and its yellow, oh well.
Because the new engine will be on rubbers we hope that our guests will notice (or actually will less notice) that we have a new main engine. Less sound, less vibration. And with the extra horsepower we hope to keep a bit more speed where before we couldn’t. In three weeks the work should be done.
