Maintenance

21 May 2014

We are still working with everything we’ve got to get the ‘Oosterschelde’ ready. We are slowly making progress. A lot of work that is quite simple just takes a lot of man-hours. Putting a gaff on the quayside, sanding and varnishing and putting it back up with the sails takes days and that is just a gaff.
But we have to take care of the ship that has cared for us so well during our circumnavigation. The main engine and generator are checked. The exterior has been done at the wharf. The sails are back from the sail maker and can be put back on. The restored boom, the gaff and the topsail gaff can be put back in place. The hardware and rigging of the bowsprit are also back in place. All the cabins have new carpeting, new mattresses and bedding. The galley is remodelled intensively, but is not quite finished yet. And between all this we try to paint the deck. Tomorrow we will calibrate the compass.
