Message from Derek Gardner (North Fambridge, UK):
“Dear Sailing Yacht ‘Oosterschelde’,
Thank You Tall Ship ‘Oosterschelde’ for letting me spend some time with you. You are maybe an old lady but certainly you are still beautiful! Your body may be a little old and wrinkled in places but still you have a youthful spirit as you take us quickly and safely towards Rotterdam. Your clothes (sails) are looking a little weary, but after going all around the world you can be forgiven. However, they are still strong and give you such power. Some nights ago we sped through the dark peaking at a little over 10 knots, just like a flat round stone being skimmed across the water. I think you are anxious to get back home after such a long time away. You have an appointment with the yard who will give you a health check before sending you on your way again. I think you are in fine spirit and healthy as you are looked after by such a dedicated group of people that love you dearly and look after all your needs.
I feel honoured to be a friend of yours. You have given many people a lot of fun and pleasure over your lifetime. I am sure that you will be vibrant and energetic for many years to come.
Your fiends (Skipper, First Mate & crew) that look after you are very true friends to you, and lovingly tend to all your needs, and make sure that you are clean and look beautiful all the time.
It is a great pleasure to spend time with you and I savour the time I am with you. I will be sorry to leave you in Rotterdam, but I have another lady to see back in England.
I am sure that you have many friends still to meet you and old friends that will visit you from time to time. Again, I thank you for spending this time with me. Especially I thank those that see to our inner sustainance. They do an amazing job under sometimes difficult conditions.
Thank You All.”
