“A quarter to nine pm and ‘The colour purple’ is on TV. Two people sitting on the bench in front. Crewmembers chatting in the corner, after a meal. Another crewmember on duty finishing the dishes. Six men in their beds, four of them getting a quick nap cause they have to be on watch at midnight. Windows and doors are open just enough to feel a cooling breeze in the saloon. All sails in the front are up, and with the help of the schooner and mainsail we are doing a fair amount of knots. One man steering 60 degrees. The captain singing songs outside on the bench in the spotlight of the moon. People drinking coffee in the wheelhouse. And one man sits outside. It all feels homey. Sailing between Namibia and Brazil and 900 miles to go to Ascension Island. Although night is falling, it still feels warm outside. Warm and no mosquitoes, what a bless. And some wind, that’s even a bigger gift. Today we got our first catch of the trip, a barracuda, so thin and long it looked like a Dutch eel. Good enough for a picture, because if you zoom enough you’ll see its nice teeth. But way to petite to feed 22 mouths. Besides that, we placed our bets on fresh tuna.
