First landing

Elvira reports:
“Today after breakfast it was time for our first landing. The weather is good and now and then the sun shines through the clouds. The first dinghies are going back and forth to shore and I get on the last one with our cook Fennardie and sailor Peter. For the first landing I don’t really know what to expect, how cold will it be? How many layers of clothing shall I put on, without risking not being able to move anymore? We land at a beach that has a large penguin rookery. The first penquin chicks are big enough to wander around curiously. I could easily stay here for hours, but we need to follow the guides who are showing the guests around the island. We climb up the hill, through the snow, a lot has melted away so sometimes we have to jump over the moss. When we arrived on top, we had a great view on a large group of Elephant seals. They make the strangest sounds (burping, farthing and roaring) and appearantly don’t mind us at all, so we are able to make some great close-up pictures. We continue our walk and return after about 2,5 hours back at the pinguin rookery. I can’t wait for the next landing!”
