Voyage description

From the airport of Sal, you will travel to Palmeira, where the OOSTERSCHELDE will be waiting for you at anchor in the harbour. The crew welcomes you on board and shows you to your cabin. This long voyage offers you the opportunity to experience the true life of a sailor. You will be part of the crew and participate in the watches. Before we leave, the crew will give you extensive instructions. We have an ocean crossing ahead of us, so we will not make many stops. During the first leg of the voyage we will still be under the influence of the trade wind. That means good weather, but also a firm wind coming from the northeast. We will try to steer upwind, as much north as possible.

We will stay here for a day to replenish supplies. Of course we take the opportunity to view the island. After this stop we continue the journey towards Rotterdam. We are now out of the trade. It is still very early in the spring, so there is a chance that we will have to deal with worse weather on this route. Fortunately, in those cases the wind direction is usually westerly and therefore favorable for us. Close to the Azores there is a good chance of seeing whales, but also later in the trip we are not alone. We see more and more shipping and even so far out to sea there are birds around us. Occasionally we see an angelfish, dolphins or other sea creatures.

As we approach the English Channel, the deep blue waters of the Atlantic change color to green. The continental shelf begins. Here the seabed rises steeply from a depth of 5 kilometers to a depth of 200 meters. Hundreds of seabirds and fishing vessels mark these nutrient-rich waters.

If the journey goes well, we will certainly have time for one or two stops in an English or French port or on one of the Channel Islands. In mid-April we sail through the Pas de Calais into the North Sea for the last miles to Rotterdam, where we will arrive on April 26. You will disembark at the Leuvehaven in Rotterdam on 27 April at 9 am.

General

A mile-maker is a voyage that takes the ship from A to B in as short a time as possible. Depending on the weather, a mile-maker can take one or two days longer or shorter. You pay a fixed price for participation, regardless of the duration of the voyage.

Level 3

These trips are only suitable for fit and experienced sea travellers. During a long voyage or crossing, there are few options for entering a port and medical care is not available within 24 hours.

OOSTERSCHELDE wants to be accessible to the widest possible audience, but you must realize that you are making a voyage aboard a seagoing sailing ship. This requires more of your physical ability than a daily walk. One trip is more challenging than the other. With the different levels we provide an indication of what kind of trip it is. If you are unsure whether a trip is suitable for you it is important that you contact OOSTERSCHELDE for advice.
