Voyage description

From the airport you travel by taxi to the village of Palmeira. The OOSTERSCHELDE is anchored just outside the harbour. The crew will pick you up with the dinghy. This ocean voyage offers you the opportunity to experience the real sailor’s life. You will be part of the crew and you will participate in the watch system.

Before we leave, the crew will give you extensive instructions. There is an ocean voyage on the program, so we make very few stops along the way. During the first leg of the voyage, we will sail in an area with Trade Winds. That means good weather, but also a strong wind coming from the northeast. So we try to steer north as much as possible and sail high on the wind.

The first stop will be in Horta on the Azores. Here we will stay for a day to restock the supplies and guests will disembark or come on board for the second part of this trip. Of course we will take the opportunity to visit the island. Due to the temperate climate and the very fertile subsoil, the islands are covered with lush vegetation.

After this stop we will continue our journey in the direction of Rotterdam. It is still spring, so there is a chance of bad weather on the way. Fortunately, the wind direction on this leg is, especially in those cases, westerly and therefore favourable for us.

Close to the Azores, there is a good chance to see whales, but also later during the trip we are not alone. Even so far out at sea there are many birds around us and every now and then we see a moonfish, dolphins or other sea creatures.

Closer to the English Channel, the colour of the water changes from the deep blue water of the Atlantic Ocean to the more greenish water where the continental shelf starts. The seabed goes from a depth of 5 kilometres to a depth of 200 metres.

If the voyage goes as planned, we still have time for a stop in an English or French port or on one of the Channel Islands. At the end of April we will sail through the Strait of Dover the North Sea again. On the 17th of April you will disembark in Rotterdam.

General

A mile-maker is a voyage that takes the ship from A to B in as short a time as possible. Depending on the weather, a mile-maker can take one or two days longer or shorter. You pay a fixed price for participation, regardless of the duration of the voyage.

Level 3

These trips are only suitable for fit and experienced sea travellers. During a long voyage or crossing, there are few options for entering a port and medical care is not available within 24 hours.

OOSTERSCHELDE wants to be accessible to the widest possible audience, but you must realize that you are making a voyage aboard a seagoing sailing ship. This requires more of your physical ability than a daily walk. One trip is more challenging than the other. With the different levels we provide an indication of what kind of trip it is. If you are unsure whether a trip is suitable for you it is important that you contact OOSTERSCHELDE for advice.
