Voyage description

While it is autumn in the Netherlands, the OOSTERSCHELDE leaves for a sunny winter destination: Cape Verde. This ocean voyage offers you the opportunity to experience the real sailor’s life. You will be part of the crew and you will participate in the watch system.

During the voyage we will only make a few stops. So, this voyage is not meant for people who come for sightseeing. You will stay aboard the three-master for three and a half weeks! A voyage of over 2500 nautical miles is ahead of us.

Via the North Sea we sail in the direction of the Strait of Dover and then we cross the Bay of Biscay. This first part of the trip we may have to deal with bad weather and at sea it will be quite cold.

We might make a stop in Vigo, on the Spanish coast just above Portugal. Here you can go ashore to visit the city or to sit on a terrace. After this visit we will sail further south along the Portuguese coast and gradually it will get less cold.

Once passed Cabo São Vicente, we can expect good weather and a favourable wind towards the Canary Islands. We expect to arrive in Tenerife on December 2nd. After a day of exploring the island we will sail on to Cape Verde.

This last part of the trip will probably be very enjoyable. We will pick up the northeast trade wind and the current is also favourable for us. We are also so southern that the temperature will be very pleasant.

We hope to cover the 700 miles from Tenerife to Sal quickly. It may be that we arrive earlier, but we will to drop anchor in the bay near Santa Maria on December 10 the latest.

The next day, after breakfast, you will disembark at 9 o’clock. You can extend your stay in Cape Verde yourself or fly back home the same day.

General

A mile-maker is a voyage that takes the ship from A to B in as short a time as possible. Depending on the weather, a mile-maker can take one or two days longer or shorter. You pay a fixed price for participation, regardless of the duration of the voyage.

Level 3

These trips are only suitable for fit and experienced sea travellers. During a long voyage or crossing, there are few options for entering a port and medical care is not available within 24 hours.

OOSTERSCHELDE wants to be accessible to the widest possible audience, but you must realize that you are making a voyage aboard a seagoing sailing ship. This requires more of your physical ability than a daily walk. One trip is more challenging than the other. With the different levels we provide an indication of what kind of trip it is. If you are unsure whether a trip is suitable for you it is important that you contact OOSTERSCHELDE for advice.
