Voyage description

You will step on board in Horta on the Azores. The crew has stocked up and prepared the ship for the next leg. You will meet your fellow sailors. Some of them have been on board since Sal in Cape Verde. This long voyage offers you the opportunity to experience the true life of a sailor. You will be part of the crew and participate in the watches. Before we leave, the crew will give you extensive instructions.

We will leave the Tradewinds behind. It is very early in spring, so there is a chance we will encounter bad weather on this leg. Luckily the prevailing wind is west and therefore favourable for us. Close to the Azores there is a chance to spot whales, but also later on we won’t be alone. We will see more and more other ships and even this far out at sea there are still birds. We might see moonfishes, dolphins and other sea life.

As we approach the English Channel, the color of the deep blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean changes to green. The continental shelf begins. Here the seabed rises steeply from a depth of 5 kilometers to a depth of 200 meters. Hundreds of seabirds and fishing vessels mark these nutrient-rich waters. If the journey goes well, we will certainly have time for one or two stops in an English or French port or in one of the Channel Islands. In mid-April we sail through the Pas de Calais into the North Sea for the last miles to Rotterdam, where we will arrive on April 26. On April 27 at 9 am you will disembark in the Leuvehaven in Rotterdam.

General

A mile-maker is a voyage that takes the ship from A to B in as short a time as possible. Depending on the weather, a mile-maker can take one or two days longer or shorter. You pay a fixed price for participation, regardless of the duration of the voyage.

These trips are only suitable for fit and experienced sea travellers. During a long voyage or crossing, there are few options for entering a port and medical care is not available within 24 hours.

OOSTERSCHELDE wants to be accessible to the widest possible audience, but you must realize that you are making a voyage aboard a seagoing sailing ship. This requires more of your physical ability than a daily walk. One trip is more challenging than the other. With the different levels we provide an indication of what kind of trip it is. If you are unsure whether a trip is suitable for you it is important that you contact OOSTERSCHELDE for advice.
