Voyage description

On April 1st you will board the OOSTERSCHELDE in the port of Horta. Before leaving this vegetated island, the crew will give you detailed instructions. An ocean voyage is scheduled. This means that we will make only a few stops. This trip offers you the opportunity to experience the real sailor’s life. You are part of the crew and you participate in the watch system.

After a good night’s sleep, it’s time to leave Horta and head to Rotterdam. It’s still spring, so there’s a chance of bad weather on the way. Luckily, the wind direction on this leg, especially in those cases, is westerly and therefore favourable for us.

Close to the Azores there is a good chance that we will see whales, but also later during the trip we are not alone. Even so far out at sea there are many birds around us and every now and then we see a moonfish, dolphins and other marine animals.

Close to the English Channel the colour of the deep blue water changes from the Atlantic Ocean to the more greenish water. The continental shelf begins. Here the seabed goes from a depth of 5 kilometres to a depth of 200 metres.

If the voyage goes well, we have time for a stop in an English or French port or on one of the Channel Islands. Mid-April we sail through the Strait of Dover into the North Sea. On April 17th at 9 o’clock you will disembark in the Leuvehaven in Rotterdam.

General

A mile-maker is a voyage that takes the ship from A to B in as short a time as possible. Depending on the weather, a mile-maker can take one or two days longer or shorter. You pay a fixed price for participation, regardless of the duration of the voyage.

Level 3

These trips are only suitable for fit and experienced sea travellers. During a long voyage or crossing, there are few options for entering a port and medical care is not available within 24 hours.

OOSTERSCHELDE wants to be accessible to the widest possible audience, but you must realize that you are making a voyage aboard a seagoing sailing ship. This requires more of your physical ability than a daily walk. One trip is more challenging than the other. With the different levels we provide an indication of what kind of trip it is. If you are unsure whether a trip is suitable for you it is important that you contact OOSTERSCHELDE for advice.
